Fishing

The Forest of Bowland has two main Rivers, the Hodder and Ribble. A Ribble tributary the Calder joins at Whalley with the Hodder also joining the Ribble at Hodder Foot in Mitton.


To the north of Bowland runs the Lune with its two main tributaries the Wenning and the Greta. Also, not too far away eastwards are the two Yorkshire rivers the Aire and the Wharfe, with all these rivers, at some point, within 20 miles of Clerk Laithe Lodge.

The Hodder, which is close to Clerk Laithe Lodge, has resident Wild Brown Trout and Grayling, with Sea Trout and Salmon in the Autumn months, with most of the river fished by private clubs. Day tickets to fish the Hodder are available in nearby Slaidburn from the Village Store.


Bowland Flyfishing has fishing available on all the local rivers, with personal supervision by Peter Scholes.


Stocks Fishery at nearby Slaidburn is one of the best fisheries in Britain for Rainbow Trout with tickets available from the Fishery Lodge.


Other fisheries local to Clerk Laithe include Bank House Fishery at Caton, Barnsfold Fishery at Goosnargh and Pendle View Fishery at Barrow near Clitheroe for Carp.


Fly Fishing is the only permitted fishing method on the majority of the rivers and fisheries with rules etc available at the Fisheries.


Salmon do run the rivers in the Autumn but fishing permits are limited with details available from Bowland Flyfishing.

Stocks Reservoir Fly Fishery

Stocks Reservoir is the largest fly fishery in the North West and is the premier water in the North of England. There is  four and a half miles of fishable shoreline with 32 boats available for hire. The reservoir has 350 acres of open water at the head of the Hodder Valley - the landscape has a wild and unspoilt quality. It is stocked with Rainbow, Brown & Blue Trout. There is a well stocked tackle shop and a cafe. It is situated some 2 miles from Clerk Laithe Lodge.

Bank House Fly Fishery

A small mature oasis, not only for fly fishing but also for the abundant wildlife in this natural setting with its differing habitats. The waters are stocked with naturally feeding rainbows, blues,browns and tigers.

Barnsfold Waters Trout Fishery

Situated in the shadow of Beacon Fell Country Park with two lakes of eleven acres giving excellent bank fishing. Boats are also available. Fly fishing only - for hard fighting rainbows.
